Ghaele [Greater Eladrin]

Knight-errant eladrins who quietly rally the oppressed against tyranny, striking down evil with gaze, blazing sword, and searing beams of light.

Setting: Planescape · Sources: Planescape II

Appearance

Ghaeles look like tall, athletic high elves and could be mistaken for elven nobility but for their opalescent, pearly eyes and the glow that surrounds them. Away from home, naturally, it is likely to be hidden behind some mortal guise. A ghaele can also become an intangible five-foot sphere of shifting, eldritch colors.

Combat

In elven form, ghaeles wield blazing long swords +4 whose positive energy burns evil foes for 1d10 beyond normal damage. Their gaze reaches 60 feet: evil creatures under 5 Hit Dice who meet it must save vs. spell or die, and even a successful save leaves them terrified for 2d10 rounds. Nonevil foes, and evil ones of 5 HD or more, suffer only the fear, and only if they fail the save.

As a sphere of light, a ghaele cannot use its gaze but fires brilliant beams with a 100-yard range and +4 to hit, each dealing 2d12.

Its ever-present nimbus of light serves as protection from evil at double strength out to 20 feet, a minor globe of invulnerability and protection from normal missiles. Ghaeles cast spells as 14th-level priests and, once per round, can use any of these: charm monster, hold monster, ESP and detect invisibility; color spray, dancing lights, continual light, advanced illusion and improved invisibility; dispel magic, telekinesis, wall of force and teleport without error; polymorph any object and prismatic spray; or a 12d8 chain lightning bolt. They can be struck only by weapons of +3 or better or by cold-wrought iron.

Habitat and Society

Ghaeles are the eladrins' knights errant. Wherever tyranny and evil take hold, they work behind the scenes, organizing resistance and guiding any good-hearted beings brave enough to stand up to their oppressors, and they are more practiced at working behind a mortal veil than any of their kin. They also serve as counselors to the tulani, the lords of the eladrin courts. Two or more ghaeles are seldom found together, although several may serve the same tulani.

A ghaele is gentle and compassionate, but its war against evil never leaves its thoughts; even in its blissful home it wonders how things fare on the last world it left. Long work among mortals makes ghaeles the most serious and sorrowful eladrins, and the ones who best grasp the burdens of mortal life.
