Spiderstone Golem

A four-armed obsidian statue of a drow, haunted by a bound demon spirit, the spiderstone golem serves dark elf masters until the day it goes wild and turns on them.

Setting: Core Rules · Sources: Monstrous Compendium, 1994 Annual, Volume 1; Dragon193

Appearance

Sometimes called obsidian golems, these constructs are carved from glossy black volcanic glass in the likeness of a four-armed drow and weigh about 1,000 pounds. Dormant, one looks like any statue. When it wakes, its eyes kindle a fiery red.

Combat

It pummels with four fists or spits webbing up to 90 yards. The spit needs an attack roll. On a hit, everyone within 20 feet is caught as if by a web spell, and the creature at the center gets no saving throw. A miss splashes harmlessly like any missed grenade-like missile and evaporates in 1d4 rounds.

Only weapons of +1 or better enchantment can strike it, and it can spider climb at will. Spells cannot affect it unless they come from drow priests or belong to the invocation/evocation school, and even those still face its magic resistance and any allowed save.

Habitat and Society

Drow spellcasters build these golems to guard temples or hunt foes of the priesthood. Each is inhabited by an unnamed tanar'ri in service to the spider goddess, which keeps it from ever being used against her or her faithful. Because that spirit is not wholly bound to the stone, the construct counts as a lesser golem.

Under mortal control it is as dim as any golem, though its fiendish overseer makes it evil. It accepts one new command each round, limited to four words from a wizard or six from a priest.

Every week there is a chance it goes wild. Commanded by a priest of the spider goddess, the risk is just 1%. A wizard in her service faces 5%; a master using it to guard something personal that is worthless to the goddess faces 50%; using it against her makes it certain. A wild golem's Intelligence climbs to Semi (2-4). It hunts down and kills its master, then obeys the goddess, even rigging simple traps to make the most of its powers.

Ecology

Outside drow service it neither takes from nor adds to its surroundings, like other golems of the deep places. Its ground remains are prized for making scrolls and magic tied to spiders and their gifts, such as a scroll of spider climbing, a cloak of arachnida or an arrow of slaying arachnids. Its eyes are rubies worth up to 10,000 gp each.
