Oathbinder Genie [Tasked]

A black-skinned efreeti wreathed in white flame that exists only to enforce sworn oaths, appearing within moments of a broken vow to burn the oathbreaker and imprison their ghost.

Setting: Al-Qadim · Sources: Monstrous Compendium, 1994 Annual, Volume 1

Appearance

An oathbinder's skin is glassy black, like polished volcanic glass, and a constant halo of pale white fire clings to its body. Its eyes burn violet. These are reshaped efreet, and they speak the efreet tongue.

Combat

No one meets an oathbinder by chance. It is bound into a magical oath ceremony and only arrives when that oath is broken or the binding is dispelled. When a vow is broken, the genie is whisked to the offender within 1d3 rounds. At that point a dispel magic can be tried against the binding, which counts as 12th-level magic.

Even a successful dispel brings the genie, which shows up to learn why its oath was undone and attacks if it judges the oath should still hold. If circumstances have truly changed so that the vow no longer fits, for example an oath that covered only members of one tribe sworn by someone since cast out of it, the genie withdraws and the oath dissolves with no penalty to anyone.

Its attack is a jet of white fire from each hand, similar to burning hands but with each hand aimed separately at its own target. Each stream reaches 8 feet and deals 4d6 points of damage. Nothing physical or magical used by a creature whose oath it watches over can harm it.

An oathbreaker killed by the genie rises at once as a ghost. The genie seizes and weakens that spirit for a month per victim level, and during that time speak with dead cannot reach it and it cannot be raised from the dead. Afterward the spirit is released to rest. Resurrection and reincarnation still work whenever they normally would.

Its spell-like powers, each usable thrice daily at 12th level, are hold person, wall of force, command, unluck, resilient sphere, greater malison, and evil eye.

Habitat and Society

All oathbinders belong to a single order with its own code of conduct. They are masters of contracts, vows, pledges, and every shade of obligation, and they love to argue technicalities with anyone who enjoys the same sport, on any subject at all. They will not serve the marids, whose promises they consider worthless.

Ecology

Simple in their needs, oathbinders barely touch the wider world and are only ever found serving a mighty genie lord or wizard. No genie ever breaks its word once an oathbinder guards it, though many will bend, twist, and talk their way around it.

The stricter and longer the oath, the higher the price in treasure, goods, and respect. A lifelong oath of fealty is harder work than a one-year truce. Even a modest nonaggression pact has a floor of 1,000 gp, and many oaths run tens or hundreds of times that.
