Many-humped Sea Serpent

A fast, ox-headed primitive whale whose back carries a long row of air-filled humps, streaking along continental shelves at up to 40 knots.

Setting: Dragon Magazine · Sources: Dragon190

Appearance

This long, serpentine primitive whale has a blunt, flat-topped oval head and wide snout like a hornless ox, a slender neck of middling length that sometimes bears a small triangular shoulder fin, front flippers and a twin-lobed whale tail. Its hallmark is the evenly spaced row of humps along the back. The skin is mostly smooth, dark brown to black above and pure white below, sometimes with a white neck stripe or two, countershading typical of continental shelf dwellers.

Combat

It bites for 2-12, never uses its tail, swims at 30 and otherwise has common whale statistics (12 Hit Dice).

Ecology

The humps may be inflatable air sacs that store air for deep dives and, being on the spine, steady it at the surface. It reaches 35 to 40 knots and up to 115 feet, though most are the typical sea serpent length. Almost all reports come from eastern North America, especially New England. It keeps to warm water, following the Gulf Stream north, and ventures into cooler seas in summer.
