Hammer Golem

A towering stone dwarf in adamantite armor with a warhammer for one forearm and an axe or pick for the other, built by dwarf priests to grind orcs and goblins into gravel.

Setting: Core Rules · Sources: Monstrous Compendium, 1994 Annual, Volume 1; Dragon193

Appearance

Picture a giant dwarf of stone, beard and all, about 9 feet tall and roughly 2,000 pounds, sheathed in adamantite plate. Below each elbow the arm becomes a weapon: a hammer on the right and, on the left, usually an axe or a pick. It moves slowly and ponderously and communicates in no way at all, except for the hollow bellow it lets loose as it charges orcs and their kin.

Combat

It fights only when its master orders it to, when it meets orcs, or when someone interferes with its assigned duty, such as trying to reach what it guards. Its creator may give it any number of commands, provided all of them together use no more words than double its maker's Wisdom score.

A masterless hammer golem attacks whatever stands before it until the foes run, leave its charge alone or die. Against goblinoids, nothing but their deaths or its own destruction will stop it.

Each round it swings the hammer first for 2d10, then the pick for 2d12. Once per turn it can also unleash a pounding blast that works like a repulsion spell but also deals 4d6 damage, halved by a successful save vs. spell.

Like every golem it ignores mind-affecting magic and poison, but it goes much further: nearly every spell fails against it. Wish works normally, and stone to flesh heals it as a heal spell. Only weapons of +1 or better can strike it.

Habitat and Society

Hammer golems are the bane of orcs and other enemies of the dwarves. Dwarf priests build them in a process as rare and jealously guarded as the forging of the greatest dwarven weapons, and use them as sentries, soldiers or tireless miners able to bore through solid rock at a movement rate of 6. Those built purely for mining carry a pick on both arms.

Ecology

Apart from extracting minerals and slaughtering goblins, these golems contribute nothing to the ecology of the deep places or anywhere else.
