Fire-breathing fiends that evil casters summon to protect a treasure, from horned frog-things to colossal winged bears, each chained to within 90 yards of its charge.
Wicked wizards and priests call these fiends to watch over something valuable, and they guard it savagely. They come in three grades, least, lesser, and greater. Least ones are often horned, froglike brutes and lesser ones apish or boarlike, though both vary in shape and size. Greater guardians always take the form of enormous winged bears with ram's horns on their brows and eagle's talons for hands. All of them speak every language.
Three times a day a guardian fiend can exhale a cone of fire 30 feet long and 10 feet wide at the base, dealing 3d6 (least), 5d6 (lesser), or 7d6 (greater) damage, halved by a save vs. breath weapon. It never breathes if the flames could harm what it protects. It must stay within 90 yards of its charge, and inside that radius it prefers to keep its distance and make the most of its breath.
No guardian can be affected by fear, sleep, hold, charm, or polymorph spells, and lesser and greater ones cannot be hurt by weapons below +2. Many are also invulnerable to one or more further attack forms, such as swords, cold, fire, or electricity.
Least: typically sent to guard hoards worth under 25,000 gp; 50% chance of immunity to one extra attack form.
Lesser: usually guards treasure of 25,000 gp or more; 80% chance of immunity to one extra attack form.
Greater: assigned only to objects of tremendous worth. It has 25% magic resistance, is always immune to two extra attack forms, and once each round, even mid-battle, can issue a suggestion as the spell.
Summoning one is risky. The caster's chance of success is 10% per level above 7th, to a maximum of 90%. On a failure, a 30% chance applies, minus 2% per level above 10th, that the insulted fiend gates in and kills the caster.
