Oathkeeper Fiend [Lesser Mercenary]

Lopsided, red-scaled petty lords of the mercenary fiends, with one giant arm that stuns, acid breath, and a hunger for the life force of unconscious foes.

Setting: Planescape · Sources: MC8 Outer Planes Appendix; Planescape I

Appearance

An oathkeeper fiend is a big, heavily muscled humanoid with scaly red skin and mismatched arms, one human-sized and the other fit for a giant. Its hideous head sports winglike ears, and its features are as twisted and alien as its temperament. It speaks telepathically.

Combat

Its Strength of 22 gives +10 damage, but only with the giant arm, whose blow deals 1d12 and stuns for 2d6 rounds unless the target saves vs. paralysis. The smaller hand usually holds a sword or mace without the Strength bonus; 30% of these weapons carry a plain enchantment such as +1 or +2, never anything special. Three times a day it can exhale corrosive vapor that sears bare skin for 6d6 damage, halved by a save vs. breath weapon, and stuns victims for 1d6 rounds, or 1d3 rounds with a successful save vs. paralysis. It can also use shocking grasp three times daily for 1d8+10 damage, along with all the usual mercenary fiend powers.

Given an unconscious foe, it presses its head to the victim's flesh and feeds for five rounds, stealing 10-100% (fractions rounded up) of its hit points, ability scores such as Strength and Dexterity, and experience points. If the victim wakes, the feeding stops with no loss. Slaying the fiend within a day restores everything taken; otherwise only a restoration spell will. Only +1 or better weapons can wound an oathkeeper, and attacks based on earth deal it half damage.

Habitat and Society

These are the nobility of their race, each governing one of the regions into which mastermind fiends have divided mercenary fiend territory, and each loathed by everyone living there. They are weaker than many of their subjects, but the mastermind fiends who drew the borders uphold their rule. Oathkeepers often order the execution of higher-ranking fiends just to raise their own already inflated standing, so every mercenary fiend but the masterminds despises them and betrays them savagely whenever possible. Because of this hatred, they can never gate in allies. Greedy, gluttonous, and wildly abusive, they pay little heed to the rest of their society.

Ecology

Oathkeepers care nothing for contracts or for the endless war between demons and devils. Pure consumers, they live off the toil of others and create nothing of worth, and no one understands why the masterminds handed them rule over regions of the lower planes. Their odd anatomy hints at some strange crossbreeding, perhaps giant blood in their ancestry, or perhaps the other way around.
