Faerie Dragon [Dragonet]

A tiny, butterfly-winged prankster of tangled forests that turns invisible at will, casts mischievous spells, and leaves its victims grinning in a haze of euphoria gas.

Appearance

Faerie dragons are a chaotic branch of the pseudodragon family: slender little dragons with long prehensile tails, gauzy butterfly wings and enormous grins. Their color runs through the spectrum with age, from hatchling red to great wyrm black. Females shimmer with a golden tinge in sunlight, males with silver. They speak their own language and those of sprites, pixies, elves and local birds and animals, and talk telepathically with each other up to 2 miles away.

Combat

They can go invisible at will and still attack, cast and breathe while unseen. They fight as 4-HD monsters with a 1-2 bite. About 65% cast wizard spells and 35% priest spells from the Animal, Plant, Elemental and Weather spheres, at a level set by age, nearly always chosen for mischief. Water breathing and legend lore top the list; other favorites are forget, ventriloquism, suggestion, unseen servant, obscurement, distance distortion, animate rock, animal growth and limited wish.

The usual opening is to vanish and breathe a 2-foot puff of euphoria gas. A victim who fails a save vs. breath weapon drifts about blissfully for 3d4 minutes, unable to attack and with Armor Class worsened by 2. Each round a successful Intelligence check (roll equal to or under the score on 1d20) keeps him aware of what is going on; failure means he stops caring entirely until the effect ends.

They shun fights and harm no one unless cornered or protecting the lair, but if attacked they resist spiritedly, with sprite and pixie friends, until the foes are driven off.

Habitat and Society

They nest in hollows high in trees, ideally near a pond or stream, since they love swimming and diving, often alongside pixies or sprites. Passers-by are fair game for pranks, often with help from forest animals; many are spur-of-the-moment, but a single grand joke may take months to set up. Their giggle, like tiny silver bells, often warns victims that an invisible faerie dragon is nearby.

Ecology

Their diet is plants, nuts, honey and grain; fruit pastries are a passion, and some will go to great lengths for a fresh apple pie.
