A flat, parchment-bodied dragonet that lives in spellbooks and scrolls, eats the magic off the page, and burps its last meal back at anyone who disturbs it.
This nearly two-dimensional little dragon looks as if it were folded from fine, costly parchment, its body covered with markings like handwriting or illustrations. In dim torchlight there is a 50% chance it passes for a mere drawing of a dragon until someone looks closely or brings more light.
In melee it claws twice, bites and stings with its tail. The sting's poison puts the victim to sleep for two turns, or, with a save vs. poison, leaves him drowsy for two turns. A drowsy character can't do anything requiring speed or dexterity, such as climbing, picking locks or dodging missiles, and suffers -3 to hit and damage (minimum 1 damage).
Its other weapon is the last spell it ate. Its lair holds 1-4 scrolls it is saving for dinner, generated normally, plus one more scroll representing its latest meal; one random spell from that scroll is what it can throw, delivered as a burp aimed at its foes. A protection scroll lets it create that protection; a cursed scroll leaves it with no spell attack. In a pinch it can wolf down all or part of a scroll in one round, eating a single spell without harming the others, using read magic to choose the most useful.
Legend says an eccentric wizard made the first one to guard his spell library, then poured in more magic so it could live anywhere and breed. Something went wrong, and the creature began eating scrolls instead of protecting them. By the time the wizard noticed, it was gone, and so were the contents of his library. Paper dragons now turn up in scrolls, spellbooks and other magical writings, living on the enchanted ink. They are good natured but destructive, and nobody knows how they reproduce.
A dead paper dragon can be unfolded like origami. If it was not damaged by whatever killed it and the person unfolding it makes a 1d20 Dexterity check to avoid tearing it, it opens into a 1-foot-square sheet bearing the text of the last scroll it ate.
