Carnivorous Plant [Greyhawk]

Twisted cousins of the treants, the rope-coiled kampfult and the spike-trunked giant polyp lurk in ruins and dark caves waiting to strangle or digest whatever wanders close.

Overview

These two deadly growths are thought to be corrupted offshoots of the treant line, and both tend to look like withered, rotting old trees of whatever kinds grow nearby.

Kampfult

Also called the sinewy mugger, a kampfult is a ropy creature built around a four-foot core that looks like the decaying stump of a felled tree. From the core sprout six attacking limbs about six feet long and six walking limbs about a foot long, so it can attack several targets at once. A struck victim is wrapped up and takes 1 point of crushing damage per round until the kampfult dies or the victim escapes; Strength 16 or better breaks free automatically in one round, while weaker characters need a successful Strength check. Killing it requires damaging the core, but cutting off its tentacles (2 points of slashing damage each) also leaves it harmless. Every part of it is AC 4.

By stretching out or drawing in its limbs it can pass for something harmless, imposing -3 on opponents' surprise rolls. It once lived in dense forests, hiding its body among the vines and creepers and looping coils around passing prey to strangle it. Humans hunted the species hard, and the few that survive now lurk in ruins and dungeons posing as ropes or netting.

Kampfults are carnivores but weak ones. They prefer small lone animals that take little effort, spending most of the day catching mice and squirrels and seldom anything bigger. The bottom of the core is soft and porous. The plant settles it over a kill and sprays a decay agent that speeds absorption. Because the agent affects only living tissue, any treasure left by past victims ends up under the stump.

Giant Polyp

This huge, tree-like being is a semi-sentient polyp, related to the sea anemone. Its strong core carries 24 tentacles 15 feet long, but they are evenly spaced, so no more than three can reach one man-sized target. Each hit deals 1d2 and forces a save vs. poison at +2; failure means paralysis for one turn. The polyp then hauls the helpless victim to the mouth hidden at the bottom of its trunk, which takes two rounds, and powerful digestive juices dissolve the victim five rounds after that.

A tentacle is severed after 4 points of slashing damage and regrows fully in 2d6 days. Only attacks on the trunk can kill the polyp for good, and the trunk bristles with hundreds of razor spikes: anyone fighting it in melee is hit by 1d4 spikes for 1d4 each. Spells are the wise choice, fire above all, since fire attacks gain +2 on every damage die, and a blast like fireball that engulfs the whole creature also hurts the tentacles. Giant polyps grow in dark underground chambers with pools of stagnant water and otherwise act much like their distant kin, the kampfults.
