Carnivorous Plant [Dark Sun]

The desert world's green places hide quill-firing blossomkillers, blood-drinking dew fronds, sleep-dust poisonweed and strangling vines that hang travelers from the trees.

Blossomkiller

Found wherever the desert world has plant cover, a blossomkiller sprawls across a circle up to 45 feet in radius. Its trunk-thick stalk lies flat and branches outward, and its roots wind among all the neighboring growth like a web of trip lines. Every five to ten feet, a cluster of four green tendrils, each 2 to 3 inches thick and 5 to 10 feet long, rises from a root. Scattered evenly through the area are usually six to nine big yellow flowers on dark green stems, each with a stamen bristling like a pincushion.

Stepping on any root sets off every flower at once, filling the whole area with a spray of quills. Anyone struck takes 1d6 damage and must save vs. paralyzation or be paralyzed for 2 turns (20 minutes), and the tendrils then creep over and wrap up the helpless victim. The plant has 1 Hit Die per 10 feet of radius, to a maximum of 9. Flowers have 3 hit points each and roots 8, and all its parts are flimsy and easy to cut (AC 9).

Dew Frond

Dew fronds hide among jungle foliage. A young plant is a single stalk sprouting about four barbed, yellowish-tan fronds 3 to 5 feet long, standing 3 to 4 feet tall in a 4-foot radius. Fed on blood, it can swell to 15 feet tall with a 20-foot radius.

When something brushes past, a frond flicks out as if stirred by wind, slicing for 1d6. Its barbs lodge in the wound and draw blood at 1 hit point every two rounds until the victim is dry or pulls loose. Working free safely takes three rounds; tearing out faster costs 1d6 more damage, which does not feed the plant.

A new plant has 1 Hit Die and AC 10. For every 10 points of damage it inflicts, it gains 1 Hit Die, improves its AC by 1 (best AC 0) and grows a foot taller. After 10 points it has 2 HD, AC 9 and stands 4 to 5 feet; after 30 it has 4 HD and AC 7.

Poisonweed

This forest weed grows striking flowers along its roots, 4 to 6 inches wide with bright orange petals and pale green leaves, up to 30 per plant spread across a 20-foot radius. The blooms reach out toward trails used by animals and travelers. Each holds a sac of poison dust that bursts when touched, flooding everything within 15 feet. All inside take 1d6 damage and must save vs. poison or fall asleep; the dust coating a sleeper keeps them under as they breathe.

The roots then spend 3 turns wrapping the sleeper completely before secreting an enzyme that dissolves flesh at 1d10 per round until the victim dies. Each blow against the plant releases another cloud, requiring new saves. Every flower holds two clouds, so a typical plant has about 60. Flowers have 2 hit points each, but the whole plant has 10 Hit Dice. Cold does nothing to it and fire deals double damage. Slain, it empties every cloud it has left. The only safe way to kill one is with life-draining wizard magic, which drains its life force before it can release the dust and destroys it like all other plants in range.

Strangling Vine

About 25 feet long, a strangling vine usually droops between three or four trees right across a forest trail. Its stem is brownish green, and its glossy, mossy, deep green leaves, roughly ten per 5 feet, hide sharp thorns. Blending in so well, it imposes -1 on victims' surprise rolls.

When prey passes under, the vine falls, coils around the throat and tries to hoist the victim off the ground to hang until dead. The thorny first strike deals 1d10, and each round of strangling after that deals 1d6. The victim gets just one attempt to break loose, a Strength check at -5.
