Water Leaper

Known in its native Wales as llamhigyn y dwr (said roughly 'thlam-HEE-gin er door'), the water leaper resembles a big toad whose hind legs have been traded for a fish's tail and whose forelegs are broad fins like those of a flying fish. Its wide mouth bristles with needle-sharp teeth. Using those fins it can burst from the water and glide as far as 30 feet.

Water leapers bite, and as many as 12 can swarm a single human-sized target. A leap counts as a normal melee attack that deals no damage; instead the target must pass a Dexterity check or fall. Sitting in a boat gives +2 to the check, standing in one -2, and a fall in a small boat may well go over the side. Instead of acting, a leaper can shriek: every creature within 30 yards must save vs. spell or lose its next round. They deliberately jump at fishermen to tip them out, attack swimmers and livestock at the water's edge, and wreck nets and fishing lines.

Small schools haunt lakes and hunt with wolf-pack cunning, fanning out to strike from every side while one hangs back to shriek just as the others jump in.

They can live on fish, but their hunger soon empties any lake they occupy, and they much prefer sheep, cattle and people wading in the shallows, even trying to pull victims off bridges and out of boats. Only furious fishermen and deadlier water beasts, water horses and lake worms among them, threaten them.
