Tungsten Dragon [Ferrous]

Grim, uncompromising desert guardians who serve good by any means that works, tungsten dragons scour their arid domains for intruders and flay them with blasts of scouring sand.

Setting: Dragon Magazine · Sources: Dragon170

Appearance

Hatchlings are a dark forest green speckled with brown. The flecks fade and a metallic sheen builds to a gleaming green in adulthood, then dulls until great wyrms are flat green. Tungstens speak their own and the common ferrous tongue, and 10% of hatchlings can talk telepathically with any creature within 60 feet, rising 5% per age category.

Combat

Tungstens champion good, but mostly inside their own borders. Intruders are treated harshly unless they can prove they serve good's interests. In a fight the dragon chooses whatever ends it fastest, reasoning that if evil uses every trick to win, good cannot afford scruples.

The breath is a cone of scouring sand 70 feet long, 5 feet wide at the mouth and 20 at the base (save vs. breath weapon for half). Spells and powers work at 6th level plus combat modifier. All tungstens are immune to heat and fire from birth and gain more powers with age.

Habitat and Society

They inhabit only warm, arid lands, from deserts to dry steppes, patrolling from dawn to dusk for intruders and injustices. They are good parents, raising young to the juvenile stage and then offering them the choice to stay or seek their own territory.

Ecology

Tungstens eat almost anything, especially certain desert plants, which they harvest carefully so as not to harm the ecosystem. They clash with the blue and brass dragons of their lands: several tungstens often unite to oust the evil blues, nearly their equals, and they scorn brasses as irresponsible boors unworthy of being called good.
