A primitive, many-humped marine mammal of the frigid northern seas, possibly the last link between land carnivores and true sea serpents, and possibly already extinct.
The super otter has a long flat head with tiny eyes, a slim neck of middling length, and a long pointed tail. So supple is its backbone that six or seven humps may break the surface at once. Webbed feet that still show distinct toes mark it as the most primitive of the sea serpents. Its back has no fins or crest, and its rough, wrinkled hide is light or grayish brown.
A primitive sea mammal, it is likely kin to the first land carnivore that returned to the ocean, and may be a true sea serpent now gone extinct: no certain sighting has occurred since 1848, and it may have lost out to competition from the long-necked serpents. Its range was arctic water, mostly off Scandinavia. Meltwater keeps polar seas the freshest on earth, easing the change from land to sea; the polar bear made a similar move in the same waters.
