Sun Dragon

A playful, good-hearted dragon that frolics on the surfaces of suns, spits delayed-blast fireballs, and leaves behind a sphere of annihilation when it dies.

Setting: Spelljammer · Sources: MC9 Spelljammer Appendix II

Appearance

Its color follows a star's life: fiery red as a hatchling, burnt orange as a juvenile, bright yellow as a mature adult, blue-white when venerable. A great wyrm shrinks almost to hatchling size and fades to flat white. Confusing one with a very young moon dragon is risky. Cheerful and freedom-loving, sun dragons speak their own tongue, the good dragons' language and Common, and hate only moon dragons, their mortal enemies, whose presence anywhere in their crystal shell they can feel.

Combat

Fighting bores them, and few foes reach a lair on a sun. A sun dragon breathes once to soften enemies, then waits for them to back off; if they don't, it breathes again and charges, biting and clawing for 1d10 each. Or it plays like a cat, swatting victims into the air for 1d10 instead of claw damage; they lose initiative and need a Dexterity check at half their score to act next round.

Its breath is a spat fireball, range 240 feet, bursting 5 feet in radius per age category. A coat of saliva can hold the blast off for up to ten rounds, detonating exactly when the dragon chooses. It gains heat metal as a juvenile, fire shield as an adult and prismatic spray when very old, each 3/day, glows with continual light whenever flying, is immune to fire, and saves at -2 against cold.

Habitat and Society

They hollow roomy caves out of a star's blazing surface, and laying a clutch of 1d4+1 fireproof eggs triggers a solar flare. Hoards are coated with saliva to keep them from melting; away from the heat it freezes into sleet that flakes off. A sun dragon dying of age collapses into a sphere of annihilation (95%) or, rarely (5%), a well of many worlds, either of which has a cumulative 1% daily chance of vanishing unless fixed with permanency.

Ecology

They eat anything but intelligent creatures, out of respect for life.
