Spacesea Giant

Hairy, art-loving cousins of the stone giant who sail the void in galleons of solid rock, hurling ship-cracking boulders and patching their hulls with the same stones.

Setting: Spelljammer · Sources: MC7 Spelljammer Appendix I

Appearance

Also called rover giants, these are stone giants whose ancestors were dragged into the void as slaves of the web-eel slavers and later escaped. Unlike their bald kin below they grow hair, and proudly, letting manes and beards grow long to resemble their god Ptah.

Combat

Aboard ship they fight at range with ballistae and thrown boulders. A rock flies 500 yards (1 hex) for 3d10, or 1d3 hull points against a vessel, and every giant ship stocks a pile. In melee they swing stone clubs or maces for 2d6+8 or punch for 1d10 (1 hull point).

One giant in ten is an elder who, once a day each, can cast transmute rock to mud, stone tell and stone shape at 7th level, and half the elders also cast priest or wizard spells at 5th level. Elders steer the ship, the eldest usually as captain, and with magic and a boulder they can restore 1d4 points of hull or mast damage (never rigging). None of this works in the flame-sea.

Habitat and Society

The first escapees begged Ptah for help, and he gave them keener minds, wisdom and curiosity in exchange for a vow to wander the spheres, learning their vastness and honoring their maker. Almost all still keep it, with a special fondness for the void between worlds. Their new intellect also woke a love of art, which covers their sails and hulls. Many sign on as explorers, scouts or escorts for races that are not evil; others trade, and few pirates dare touch a giant ship.

They can use any hull rebuilt for their size, but prefer their own stone galleons, which keep them surrounded by rock as their ancestors liked. A typical one is 60 tons with a 200-foot keel and 50-foot beam, 30 tons of cargo, 11 to 20 giant crew, a major or minor helm, armor rating 3 and maneuver class E, saving as thick stone. It floats but cannot land on ground.

Ecology

Needing air is their weak point and keeps them out of the flame-sea. Most ships grow a green garden that refreshes the air and feeds both crew and the 1d4 giant goats kept for milk, which also eat the garbage.
