Shee

An eyeless, glowing elf maiden in plate armor who gallops through the night on a shadow steed, lancing every living thing once and vanishing with a killing scream.

Setting: Forgotten Realms

Appearance

Sometimes called the Banshee Rider, a shee is a rare undead that appears only at night: a luminous white elven woman with streaming white hair, empty eye sockets, and ornate plate armor, mounted on a long-maned horse that is just as eyeless. Both see despite this, with 90-foot infravision. Her form is translucent, and her touch is said to feel cold, though it carries no magical chill.

Combat

The shee charges at most creatures she meets, though any particular target has a 2 in 6 chance of being passed over. She never leaves the saddle, cannot be unhorsed, and tries to ride down anyone in her way. Each victim normally gets one strike before she gallops on, unless they keep pace with her. Her shadowy lance cannot be grabbed, cannot impale or snag, and ignores shields and armor; it deals 2d8+2 damage and drains 1 point of Strength, cumulative, with each point returning after an hour.

When the lance misses, or the shee is busy with someone else, the shadow horse tramples, knocking the target flat for 2d6 damage (fragile gear may need saves). Despite its name the horse has nothing to do with shadow undead; it is AC 0 with THAC0 11, and some sages think it is simply part of the shee.

Any weapon can harm a shee, and she causes no magical fear. Priests turn her as 'Special,' but success only makes her pick another target. She is immune to sleep, hold, charm, illusions, hypnosis, and all other mental influence, cannot be controlled by other undead or any known magic, and regenerates 1 hit point per turn.

Any blow that hits makes her vanish with a scream; everyone within 60 feet dies unless it saves vs. death magic. The vanishing is a full-round shift to a random spot on the same plane, and during that round she is AC 7 and can be attacked at both locations. She cannot vanish at will, only when struck. Undead ignore the scream but suffer her other attacks, and she often hunts them while shrugging off their special powers. A shee who is never hit rides away after one pass at everyone present, without screaming.

Habitat and Society

Shee seem to ride endlessly through dark places hunting the living, and have even been seen racing low over the sea. They are always solitary and never attack each other, though two or three may appear together, typically over a great battlefield, striking at every side alike. Some sages credit their making to a slain god of murder (work carried on by a mad god of strife and death), others to the bestial hunter god, whose 'Ghost Hunt' they supposedly are.

Ecology

Their appearances seem linked to disasters, momentous events, large gatherings, or surges of magic. A creature that survives a hit from the rider or her horse glows faintly pearl-white in the dark ever after. On a certain misty island chain this Mark of the Shee earns deep respect; bandits and villagers will not harm the bearer, and lesser undead everywhere avoid them. Only a limited wish removes it; dispel magic does not.
