Plush Golem

Disguised as a cuddly stuffed toy, the plush golem quietly comes alive for the child who owns it, maddening parents and fighting fiercely whenever that child is in danger.

Setting: Dragon Magazine · Sources: Dragon228

Appearance

Plush golems are finely sewn stuffed animals of velvet, cotton or wool, filled with batting and sometimes dried beans. Some are realistic bears, pandas, lions or tigers; others are lime green monkeys, purple bunnies or pink elephants.

Two forms stand out. Big purple-and-green dinosaurs have appeared in great numbers lately for no clear reason, and anyone older than 12 who sees one must save vs. paralyzation; failure leaves them speechless for 2 rounds. Far rarer are little striped tigers, whose young owners are suddenly scolded constantly, can never keep their rooms clean, and struggle to concentrate on schoolwork.

Combat

The toy never attacks anyone younger than 16, and fights only if provoked or if the household's children are threatened. Adults rarely suspect it, so it gains surprise. It is weak, but often distracting enough to let a child escape.

It is immune to sleep, hold, paralysis, cold spells and heat spells, though actual fire hurts it normally. Bludgeoning weapons deal half damage.

Habitat and Society

These golems usually arrive as gifts for small children, often from a meddlesome aunt or uncle. Eventually the toy reveals to its owner that it is alive, and it instinctively obeys that child. Soon the child demands that it eat at the table, join every outing and take part in everything the family does, to the household's growing exasperation.

Ecology

Like any golem, it is purely manufactured and fits nowhere in the natural order. A priest of 11th level or higher makes one with lengthy ritual, preparation of the toy, and the spells commune, animate object and prayer. A wizard needs 14th level or better; he instead sews the figure, performs preparatory rites, then casts geas, limited wish and fabricate.
