Mindless Devil [Least Baatezu]

Even less formed than a lemure, a mindless devil is a shapeless, vaguely manlike mass with stubs for a head and arms and no features at all. It is blind, deaf, and mute.

It hurls itself at any non-baatezu in the hells, never checks morale, and fights until destroyed, clawing twice for 1d2 each. Conscripted into armies, it gets a weapon, usually a club, and deals damage by weapon type. On any lower plane it regenerates 1 hp per round; even its ashes regrow, and only holy water, a holy sword, or another sanctified weapon finishes it. Mind-affecting magic such as charm person or illusion has no effect. Its only baatezu power is cause fear, used solely on command when 10 or more gang up on one defender.

Hundreds of thousands fill the top two layers of the Nine Hells. They are lawful evil souls not vile enough to become lemures, used by every devil as soldiers, food, and torment fodder. Their total obedience earns them least-baatezu rank, one notch above lemures, yet they can never advance without first being demoted to lemure, a rule some greater power set for its own ends. Devils also trade them to the mercenary fiends as payment, and those masters treat them just as brutally and eventually eat them.

Lacking intelligence, they still sense and always obey mental orders from stronger devils. A destroyed one re-forms as another, with a 1% chance of becoming a lemure, its only road toward someday being a spike devil. All lower-planar beings regard them as nothing.
