Magma Golem [Dark Sun]

A walking mass of living lava, the magma golem sets anything it touches ablaze, scorches all who stand near, and can hurl its whole molten body at a foe.

Setting: Dark Sun · Sources: Dark Sun Appendix II - Terrors Beyond Tyr; DSR4 Valley of Dust and Fire

Appearance

Powerful wizards shape these golems from raw matter gathered at a great ring of volcanoes. A magma golem is made wholly of molten stone, roughly man-shaped, about 8 feet tall and close to 1,600 pounds, and it seems to slump and flow as it walks. Its skin is a black crust split by a web of cracks through which the lava inside shines, and its eyes blaze as fiercely as the desert sun. It cannot speak or signal to anyone but the wizard who made it, and the only sound it makes is the thud of its heavy tread.

Combat

It batters foes with thick, arm-like limbs. A creature it hits must save vs. death magic or burst into flame, suffering 2d4 damage per round until someone puts out the flames. Clothing makes no difference; bare skin and flesh ignite too. Its radiant heat deals 1d6 to every creature within 10 feet, and anyone foolish enough to strike it barehanded takes 1d10.

Once every 5 rounds, in place of its normal attack, it can gather itself into a blazing glob of lava and fling itself at one enemy for 10d6 damage, halved by a save vs. death magic. A survivor must save vs. death magic again or catch fire. Large or larger creatures and those immune to fire take only 3d6 instead, still halved on a successful save. The attack leaves the golem sprawled on the ground, and it spends the next round getting up, losing that round's attack as well.

Fire and cold cannot hurt it, and electricity deals half damage. Weapons that strike it do full damage, but every one that connects risks melting: it must save vs. magical fire or be ruined. Priest spells drawn from the fire or earth spheres have no effect. Among volcanic terrain onlookers are 90% likely to take it for just another stream of lava.

Habitat and Society

The world's dragon-tyrant and its undead lich servants first made magma golems as guardians. These golems sometimes turn on their masters when other magma golems are nearby, which suggests some unknown means of communication among them. A rogue golem tries to return to the volcanic region where it was formed.

Ecology

Being a magical construct, it has no real place in the desert world's food chain.
