From fire-breathing 'false dragons' to cave crawlers that clamp down and never let go, the great lizards of swamp, hill and cavern are lazy, hungry and far more dangerous than they look.
Nicknamed false dragons, these look like wingless red dragons: gray, mottled red-brown above and reddish below, darkening from pale gray as they age. While clawing and biting they can also breathe a 15-foot cone widening from 5 to 10 feet, dealing 2d6 fire damage (save vs. breath weapon for half). Fire cannot harm them.
Sluggish and asleep half the time, they hunt from underground lairs every two weeks and drag prey home; the leavings and the shiny gems and metal they love form their hoard. A lair has a 10% chance of 1d4 eggs (5,000 gp each); hatchlings (7,500 gp) leave at once to fend for themselves. Perhaps a primitive branch of dragonkind, they live 50-100 years, and true dragons avoid them.
An oversized but ordinary swamp lizard. A 20 on its attack roll traps the victim in its mouth for double damage (2d8), then 2d8 each round after. It lazily snaps at any food that wanders by. Only the black dragons of its swamps hunt it. Lizard men keep them as mounts, pack beasts and food, and one lair may hold eggs, young and adults a century old.
Named for its minotaur-like horns, which males use only to court mates, this huge lizard is aggressive. It fights with claws and teeth and excels at ambush, imposing -5 on opponents' surprise rolls. A 20 on its attack roll means its jaws have locked on: the victim takes an automatic 3d6 every round until free or dead and cannot attack on the following round. It roams tropical hills and mountains where copper and red dragons dwell.
Sucker-tipped feet let this aggressive hunter scurry across walls and ceilings, and it never leaves its caves by choice. A 20 on its attack roll means a jaw lock for double damage (4d6) and an automatic 2d6 each round thereafter. Albino strains hate light and fight at -1 in daylight or similar brightness. Other strains can flick a 20-foot tongue that hauls a man-sized or smaller victim in for a bite next round unless they make a bend bars roll.
