Hakeashar

A drifting red globe of hands, eyes and mouths that hunts magic, the hakeashar drinks spells, drains charges, and strips memorized magic from any caster it engulfs.

Setting: Forgotten Realms · Sources: City of Splendors; Monstrous Compendium, 1995 Annual, Volume 2; FR10 Old Empires

Appearance

Also called the eater-of-magic, a hakeashar is a glowing, pulsing sphere of red mist. Inside the haze churn hundreds of clutching hands, staring eyes and gaping mouths. It squeezes easily through cracks a finger wide. These rare beings are kin to another magic-devouring mist creature and are thought to come from a different Prime Material world.

Combat

A hakeashar makes no attacks. It senses magic within 600 feet and always drifts toward the strongest concentration, heedless of the damage it takes along the way. Fire and physical attacks harm it normally, and anyone wrapped inside it is automatically hit by them. Illusions and mind control have no effect on it.

Spells aimed at it are absorbed, adding hit points equal to the damage they would deal, or equal to the spell's level if they deal none. Touching it drains 1d4 charges from a chargeable item, and the drain repeats each time two more rounds of contact pass. While in contact, magic items and artifacts stop working; artifacts recover one round after contact ends, other items after 1d4 rounds, and potions or scrolls used while touching it take effect only 1d4 rounds after contact breaks.

A spellcaster of any class engulfed by one loses a random memorized spell on first contact and another each round after, and must save vs. breath weapon at each loss or be feebleminded.

When slain, the hakeashar fades and sinks to the ground. Any magic item within its body at the time, and any magical weapon that killed it even from outside, gains 1d6 extra charges, or a second use for a single-use item such as an arrow or scroll. No such bonus applies to artifacts, potions, memorized spells or uncharged items.

Habitat and Society

Hakeashar are solitary and not native to this world. Very reluctantly, one may grant a person 20% of the spells or charges it has absorbed, usually as payment for being brought here.

Ecology

They feed only on magic and live for centuries.
