Greelox

A shadow-walking spider with scythe legs, humanlike arms and a lethal bite, the greelox webs, poisons and ambushes from darkness, then vanishes through the shadows.

Setting: Core Rules · Sources: Monstrous Compendium, 1994 Annual, Volume 1

Appearance

A greelox has eight spiny, spidery legs plus two humanlike arms, and its two foremost legs end in scythe blades. Its hide is a mottle of brown and gray; the claws and mandibles are black and the eyes a dull red. It speaks its own tongue and the language of any race living within 20 miles of its lair, and can learn any other language after hearing it spoken for an hour or more.

Combat

In a round it can strike with two spider legs (1d3 each), two arms (2d6 each) and a bite (2d4), or use weapons and shields in its hands for weapon damage instead. Its bite injects a modified form of type F poison: the victim must save or die in 1d4 rounds, and even on a success suffers 3d4 rounds of nausea that imposes -2 to attack rolls and a 1-point Armor Class penalty from sluggish movement. An acid it secretes through its skin coats everything it touches, so bare flesh against its webbing takes 1 point of damage per round; the acid harms only organic matter.

Once per turn, instead of attacking, it can fling webbing up to 90 feet, equal to web cast by a 6th-level wizard. Alternatively, it can give up its attacks for a round to twist nearby shadows into effects equal to shadow magic from a 9th-level wizard. Where shadows exist it may use dimension door at will, traveling up to 210 feet through them, and it hides in shadows with a 90% chance. Only weapons of +2 or better can hit it, and poison and acid cannot harm it.

Habitat and Society

On the Prime Material Plane greelox live alone, but tales speak of whole cities of them in the Demiplane of Shadow, huge web mazes covering acres. Young are born live and left to fend for themselves; they reach full size in a year and live about 50 years.

Ecology

In the material world they do little beyond eating vermin and small monsters that blunder into their lairs. Wizards use dried greelox webbing when making oil of acid resistance.
