Golem III

A skeleton that laughs its foes to death and a smiling toy whose bite leaves victims choking on their own giggles: two golems that turn childish and grim things lethal.

Setting: Ravenloft · Sources: MC10 Ravenloft Appendix I; Monstrous Manual

Appearance

A bone golem is assembled from skeletons that were once animated undead. It stands about 6 feet tall, weighs only 50 to 60 pounds, and rarely wears armor, so it passes easily for an ordinary walking skeleton.

A doll golem is an enchanted child's plaything. At rest it is usually made to look sweet and cheerful, but the moment it wakes its face warps into something hideous. Its maker may set it to protect children or to prey on them.

Combat

The bone golem is as mindless as any golem and fights without cunning, yet its raw strength makes it far more dangerous than it looks. Anyone who does not already know what it is has a 95% chance of mistaking it for simple undead. Its bony, talon-tipped fists deal 3d8 damage per hit, and it will never wield a weapon. Besides the usual golem traits, it takes only half damage from edged or piercing weapons able to harm it.

Nearly all spells fail against it. The exception is a shatter spell aimed at it and strong enough to affect an object of its weight: the golem saves vs. spell to negate it, and on a failure every weapon that can hurt it now deals double its normal damage, so blades do full damage and blunt weapons double.

Every third round the bone golem can tilt back its skull and let loose a ghastly cackle. Everyone who hears it makes a fear check and a horror check. Failing one leaves the listener paralyzed for 2d6 rounds; failing both kills them outright from terror.

The doll golem also shrugs off almost all magic. Fire spells hurt it, but for only half damage, and warp wood slows it exactly as the slow spell would. Mending instantly restores all its hit points.

Each round it springs at someone and bites for 3d6 damage. The victim must save vs. spell or be seized by helpless laughter, as the hideous laughter spell, unable to act. The fit begins one round later and hurts: 1d4 damage from the spasms that round, 2d4 the next, 3d4 after that, rising by 1d4 every round. Only death or a dispel magic ends it. Afterward the survivor, weakened from lack of breath, has a -1 penalty to attack rolls and saving throws for each round spent laughing (four rounds means -4), and this penalty shrinks by 1 per turn until it is gone.
