Ghaunadan [Ooze/Slime/Jelly]

A cunning ooze in service to the god of slimes that wears a charming human shape, befriends victims with a look, and swallows their blades into its body.

Setting: Core Rules · Sources: City of Splendors; Monstrous Compendium, 1995 Annual, Volume 2

Appearance

Ghaunadans are evil, intelligent oozes loyal to the elder god of slimes, oozes and jellies. Masters of their semiliquid bodies, they slip under doors and through cracks and gratings at half speed, the same rate they manage on ceilings and walls. A ghaunadan can also hold a humanoid form for up to 15 hours, usually a human man, though one or two reportedly become drow women. Shifting either way takes a full round. In that guise it dresses in the colors its god's priests favor: amber, copper, russet, flame orange, plum, purple, lavender and lilac.

Combat

As ooze it lashes with two pseudopods for 3d4 each, coating victims in paralytic slime; a save vs. paralyzation at +2 avoids 2d6 turns of paralysis. Bludgeoning attacks deal half damage. Instead of attacking, it may soften to receive blows, then harden around any weapon that hits, locking it inside like an insect sealed in resin; pulling it out takes a bend bars/lift gates roll, or the owner abandons it.

Each humanoid guise is a distinct, attractive individual (Charisma 15+). Meeting someone's eyes in that form acts as friends while the ghaunadan stays in view, ending if it leaves or reverts. It cannot grow clothes, armor or weapons, so it takes them from victims. In disguise it may stretch its arms into pseudopods, or keep its secret by using any suitable weapon at hand.

Habitat and Society

They live in any underground place with prey, usually alone but often near, and in command of, other ooze and slime creatures. Groups gather to serve their god wherever its enemies are active.

Ecology

A ghaunadan patrols its cave, city, tunnel or dungeon for intruders or prey, then either lures them close in human form or waits hidden as ooze until they are in reach. It cannot eat rings, armor, metal weapons or other inorganic items, so unless its disguise needs them, they stay where its victims fell.
