Gello Monster

A fruit-flavored mutant of the gelatinous cube that smothers its victims and shrugs off swords and spells alike, the gello monster can be beaten only by eating it as fast as possible.

Appearance

Gello monsters began when gelatin merchants held a convention in a cavern full of gelatinous cubes, the organizer thinking the name was cute. The cubes ate everyone along with their dessert samples, and the mix reacted with their juices and transformed them. Now they come in hues ranging through red and puce and flavors such as cherry or blackberry-orange. Small and silent, they impose -1 on foes' surprise rolls, though each reeks of its flavor.

Combat

It climbs a victim and covers mouth and nose, smothering for 2-8 damage each round with no attack roll, then slowly digests the corpse over 2-8 days. Edged weapons only split it into smaller monsters, while clubs and maces rebound off it with a 35% chance of striking their wielder. Spells barely matter: heat and cold just warm or chill it, magic missile makes it quiver, and ice storm becomes a pretty garnish.

The cure is to snarf it. Each round a snarfer rolls 4d6 against Constitution: under eats one serving (about a cubic foot), over means no luck this round but another try later, and an exact match means resting a round, then automatically succeeding next round. After two or more servings, three failures in a row end that character's snarfing, and he must leave combat or be at the monster's mercy.

Ecology

Some whisper of giant gello monsters only giants could finish, but nothing more is known.
