Frog

Swamp-colored frogs grown to the size of a man, giant frogs snatch prey with tongues three times their length and can gulp down anything under 3 feet tall.

Setting: Core Rules · Sources: MC2 Volume II; Monstrous Manual

Appearance

A giant frog is an ordinary frog blown up to 2 to 6 feet long. It weighs 50 pounds at 2 feet and gains 50 pounds per extra foot, topping out around 250. A frog of 2 feet has 1 Hit Die, one between 2 and 4 feet has 2, and anything longer has 3. Lighter frogs jump farther: a 50-pound frog can leap up to 180 feet, losing 20 feet of range with each further 50 pounds. It can spring 30 feet straight up but cannot jump backward or directly sideways. At that size, small animals, children and even demihumans look like dinner.

Combat

Blending into its home terrain, a giant frog gives opponents a -3 penalty to surprise. It strikes with a sticky tongue three times its own length that hits at +4 but does no damage. A caught victim gets one attack against the tongue before the frog starts to reel it in, and a hit makes the frog let go and leave that creature alone afterward. Prey lighter than the frog is dragged to its mouth the same round it misses the tongue. Heavier prey takes an extra round, which allows a second try at the tongue. A creature over double the frog's weight is too heavy to haul in; the frog gives up and lets go on the third round, whether or not its tongue was struck.

A bite on the first round the prey is in reach automatically deals maximum damage. Bites deal 1d3 for 1 HD frogs, 1d6 for 2 HD and 2d4 for 3 HD. On an attack roll of 20, a frog swallows whole any creature under 3 feet long. A swallowed victim can cut its way free with an edged weapon on an attack roll of 18 or better, which kills the frog, but suffocates after three rounds. Any damage dealt to a frog that has swallowed someone carries a 33% chance of striking the swallowed victim too. Giant frogs are afraid of fire and always back away from it.

Habitat and Society

They live in loose groups with no real social order, hunting fish, insects and small mammals aggressively. Giant turtles, giant fish and other large aquatic hunters eat them in turn.

Killer Frog

This smaller relative fights with sharp teeth and front claws instead of swallowing prey. It is a savage hunter with a particular appetite for human flesh.

Poisonous Frog

This rare normal-sized frog carries venom both on its skin and in its bite. The poison is weak, granting victims +4 on their saving throws, and it is so feeble and hard to gather that no one bothers to sell it.
