Fetish Spirits

Dim, fawning little justice-spirits that can be bound into amulets, eager to punish any wrongdoer their owner points at as long as the cause looks lawful.

Setting: Core Rules

Overview

Fetish spirits spring from the wishes of people who bend the law to selfish ends and of people who feel the law has wronged them. They are petty, spiteful and dim, and they fawn over whoever binds or owns them. One looks like a lumpy gray goblinoid, flat and unreal, like a child's painting come alive.

It is fixated on 'justice' and skilled only at excusing its own spite. Still, it will never aid a crime or an unprovoked evil.

Powers

Bound into an object such as an amulet, each spirit offers one power, which it gladly uses once per day at its owner's bidding to right wrongs, avenge or catch the guilty. The GM may invent the power or roll 1d20. A roll of 10 gives detect poison, 8-9 detect evil, 11-15 detect lie, 5-7 cause light wounds, 1-4 curse, and 14-16 protection from good (yes, the published ranges overlap). Each mirrors the priest spell it is named for.

Shamanic Pact

They accept only lawful shamans. No mortal can seek help from a wild, unbound spirit, which asks nothing beyond satisfying its sense of justice; let that drive any encounter.

Once bound, a spirit demands one animal offering each month, a bird or mouse being enough, with the blood poured over its fetish. Without it, the spirit goes on strike until paid.

The owner may aim its power at any lawful goal. It loathes lies, betrayal, theft, murder and anything that is or could be argued to be a crime, and loves nothing more than punishing 'criminals' on command. Blind to its master's own faults, it still refuses to aid a crime, unless that crime avenges an earlier one.
