Fael

A gluttonous undead that slips into feasts and parties and never stops eating, with a jaw that unhinges a full foot to bite off hands, limbs or heads.

Setting: Forgotten Realms · Sources: MC11 Forgotten Realms Appendix II; Dark Sun Appendix II - Terrors Beyond Tyr

Appearance

A fael looks almost exactly as it did alive, often a wealthy human or demihuman, and human faels are usually grossly fat. Only two things give it away: an attempt to turn it, or its bottomless hunger and the starved look in its eyes. Its clothes are often stained with spilled food, and it has the manners of a pig. It still speaks the languages it knew in life, but it is generally too busy eating, or demanding more, to hold a conversation.

Combat

It punches with both fists for 1d3 each, but its signature attack is a bite: its immensely strong jaw stretches up to a foot, biting for 1d12. If the bite deals 6 or more, roll for a 25% chance it tears away a hand-sized chunk of the victim. On 9 or more, a 25% chance it takes an arm or leg. On a full 12, a 25% chance it bites the head clean off, killing the victim instantly. GMs who build undead with modifier tables can use them to customize faels.

Habitat and Society

Faels died with their craving for consumption unsatisfied, and undeath keeps them eating. They seek out banquets, celebrations and other gatherings, slip in quietly, and start on the food. Eventually someone notices, either because the guest never stops eating or because it demands more after everything is gone. Fine cooking delights them, their favorite dishes from life most of all, but they will eat anything. Every bite only makes them hungrier, so feeding one is a trap without end. Sooner or later it must be destroyed or driven off; it never leaves of its own accord and grows furious when the living refuse to feed it.

Ecology

Faels have no role in nature beyond devouring food meant for the living. A large enough offering of food can sometimes buy a fael's services or useful information.
