Dreamwild Shaman [Human]

Outcast holy folk of the dreamwild nomads who embrace the madness of the nightmare realm, banishing dream spawn and slipping into the sleep of others.

Setting: Ravenloft · Sources: The Nightmare Lands

Appearance

A shaman has the height and hard build of any dreamwild nomad, but dresses in pelts torn from fantastic dream beasts and horrors of nightmare, which gives them an unsettling, unreal air. Their stone and wood weapons, spears included, and their few other belongings are hung with bright feathers. Besides the nomads' unique tongue, many learn clearer languages while exploring the dreamscapes, letting them talk with wanderers and dreamers alike.

Combat

Shamans are priests with normal priest spells and powers, except that they cannot turn undead. They banish dream spawn instead, resolved with the Hit Dice portion of the turning table. A 'D' result sends the creature away and also tears off any shape it borrowed from a dreamer's memories, leaving it in its true form.

More gifts arrive with experience. From 3rd level a shaman can sense whether a being is a sleeper adrift (dreamer), a waking visitor (wanderer) or dream spawn, at 25% +2% per level, and versus dream spawn has a separate 10% +2% per level chance to grasp its strengths and weaknesses. At 7th level the shaman can make dreamcatchers, talismans that locate paths through the dreamscapes' nether portals. At 9th level comes dreamwalking: once daily, on a Wisdom check at -4, the shaman sinks into a trance lasting 1 turn per level and projects a dream-self into the dreams of sleepers in the waking world, leaving the body helpless before any nightmare terror that finds it.

Habitat and Society

Shamans roam the ever-shifting forest of the nightmare realm, outcasts even among outcasts. The tribe denies the world around it; the shaman dives into its madness to find the truth. For that heresy, and because their habits draw dangerous attention from nightmare creatures, they may never live in a nomad camp.

Ecology

Like other nomads they survive by hunting and gathering, but where the tribe ignores the madness, the shaman studies it.
