Dinosaur III

More prehistoric beasts, from stampeding horned grazers and panicky herds to a long-necked swamp ambusher that drags prey under and a nimble plains carnosaur.

Iguanodon

A primitive four-legged plant eater that can rear up to reach tempting greenery, the iguanodon looks like a small sauropod, 15 feet tall and 30 feet long, but weighs only five tons. It is actually closer kin to hadrosaurs such as lambeosaurus and trachodon. Herds flee carnivores, but a cornered one defends itself with spiked thumbs and a swinging tail.

Monoclonius

Also called centrosaurus, it looks a little like a one-horned rhino. A bony frill guards its head and neck (AC 3), and its skin is very thick, though not plated like an ankylosaur's. Strong jaws and teeth let it eat nearly any plant, and its head pivots on the neck like an arm in a shoulder socket, letting it swing toward threats in any direction instantly. It fights mainly with its horn, but a stampeding herd tramples smaller creatures for 2d8 per animal.

Plateosaurus

This 8- to 10-ton herbivore usually walks on four legs, rising slowly onto two, tail held out for balance, to watch for danger or reach the crowns of ferns, palms and other trees; upright it stands more than twice a man's height. It is nervous and easily panicked. Herds migrate between feeding grounds and are frequent prey of carnosaurs such as gorgosaurus. It swallows stones now and then to grind food in its stomach, and it is an early form of sauropods like diplodocus and brontosaurus.

Struthiomimus

An ostrich-like ornithomimosaur, distantly related to deinonychus but far less aggressive, with strong running legs and a toothless bird beak. It attacks humans only when very hungry, but smaller humanoids and demihumans always look appetizing to it. It favors tall grasslands, though some close relatives live in forests.

Tanystropheus

This swamp hunter resembles a snake on thin, splayed legs, half of its length taken up by neck and head. Its small head has long jaws packed with sharp teeth. It prowls the water along riverbanks and swamp edges, and those it ambushes roll surprise at -6; if surprised, it attacks them at +2. It hauls any creature under 500 pounds into the water to finish and eat it.

Teratosaurus

A fierce, nimble plains carnosaur that chases anything that looks edible, hunting only on dry land, in open country or forest. It is related to allosaurus, ceratosaurus and tyrannosaurus, but is more primitive and somewhat heavier.

Trachodon

Also called anatosaurus, 'duck lizard', it is the model duckbill: a gentle four-ton grazer that bolts from any threat, its tail its only weapon. It is equally comfortable in shallow water, grazing water plants and floating ferns, and in woodland, chewing leaves and pine needles. Every carnosaur hunts it, the tyrannosaurus above all. It is a hadrosaur and kin to the lambeosaurus.
