A long, oily-scaled eastern dragon that guards tombs and temples for millennia, staffed by unfaithful spouses the gods have sentenced to serve it.
Pan lung are a slimmer, longer offshoot of the spirit dragon. Hatchlings are gray, but the scales shift to brilliant colors as the dragon grows, most often reds, oranges and greens. A many-colored mane frames the neck, dark whiskers sprout from the snout, and the naturally oily scales shine in sunlight. Wingless, a pan lung flies by the power of a blood-red pearl set in its brain.
A coiled dragon likes to size up its enemies first, distracting them with ventriloquism or phantasmal force, or sending minions to test them. Having watched how they fare, it strikes savagely with claws, bite and tail. Adults and older can tail slap, dealing the damage of two claws to as many foes as the dragon's age category; anyone in the sweep who fails a save vs. petrification is left stunned for 1d4+1 rounds.
In place of a tail slap, an adult or older pan lung may wrap a victim in its coils for an automatic 2d6 crushing damage per round, with a 50% chance that the victim's arms are pinned and it cannot strike back.
Charm monster 3/day and the ability to breathe both water and air are present from hatching. Its scaly command reaches 1d10 creatures per age category (3d10 for a young dragon), and its water fire deals 1d6 from hatchling to young adult, 2d6 from adult to very old, and 3d6 from venerable to great wyrm. Each of these is usable 3/day once gained: bless or curse (young), ventriloquism (young adult), phantasmal force (mature adult).
A pan lung lives in whatever crypt or temple the celestial court of heaven has set it to guard, and the post passes down the generations; one family may hold a single lair for tens of millennia.
Divine justice often punishes faithless husbands and wives by handing them over to a pan lung as minions. These servants never age and usually serve one year for every tear they made their spouse cry. They obey without question and will fight to the death on command. There is also a 25% chance the dragon keeps slaves numbering half the creatures it can hold with scaly command.
Pan lung share a language with spirit dragons and also speak the tongues of fish, reptiles and the celestial court.
They prefer fruit and vegetables, often from lavish gardens tended by their minions. Indifferent to other oriental dragons, they cooperate only when ordered to by the celestial court. Celestial dragons (t'ien lung) earn their bitter envy, and a pan lung may fly into a jealous rage and attack one.
