Boowray

A tiny, invisible spirit with mint leaves for hair that poses as a guardian angel, whispering helpful counsel until it can coax a good soul step by step into evil.

Setting: Ravenloft · Sources: Ravenloft Appendix III

Appearance

Normally a boowray cannot be seen. When it chooses to appear it looks like a minute, see-through humanoid with green skin, bright yellow eyes and mint leaves in place of hair, wearing a jerkin of leaves cinched at the waist. Nothing in that harmless look hints at its malice. It seems to speak whatever common languages are used locally, and since bystanders never hear it, it is likely somewhat telepathic.

Combat

The hard part is finding it at all. It stays invisible unless it wishes otherwise, attacks against it while unseen suffer -4, and its tiny size lets it slip almost any search. If cornered it bites once per round for 1d4, always watching for a chance to flee using its flight and invisibility. Only magic weapons of +1 or better can hurt it, and it is immune to every mind-affecting spell, including charm and command.

Its true goal is to ruin its victim's soul. It can cast suggestion once a day, but mischief caused by magic gives only brief satisfaction; what it craves is a real alignment shift. Whenever the victim does something evil because the boowray urged it, he must make a dark powers check, at a 5% penalty from the creature's seductive pull. No check is needed for acts compelled by its suggestion.

Dispel evil drives a boowray away. Any form of silence spell gives temporary relief from the whispering, and wax, cotton or similar earplugs block it too, though they also block every other sound.

Habitat and Society

At first the boowray only offers sound advice and timely warnings, introducing itself as a guardian spirit or other kindly being. Once trusted, it starts working on the victim's flaws, feeding every hidden grudge, jealousy, temper, greed or vanity it can find, with fiendish patience and subtlety. Boowrays live alone but sometimes gather in dark forest clearings to celebrate and swap stories of their successes.

Ecology

The roving fortune-telling folk call it terrepopolo, roughly 'people of the land,' apparently in reference to its close ties to the misty dread realm. It seems neither to eat nor sleep and exists only to spread the evil the land itself appears to feed on.
