Bone Naga

A skeletal serpent with an oversized human skull, raised by dark naga and evil wizards as a tireless, silent spellcaster that guards their young and their vaults.

Setting: Core Rules · Sources: Monstrous Compendium, 1994 Annual, Volume 1; The Ruins of Myth Drannor

Appearance

This crafted undead is the bare skeleton of a great worm under a human skull that looks too big for it, its empty sockets lit by hate. Making one is so exacting that few exist. It never speaks, but uses 60-foot telepathy to talk with its maker. It can broadcast thoughts though never as an attack, and it usually hides its mind behind a wall of mental static whenever it senses another.

Combat

The fangs bite for 1d4 points of damage; on a failed save vs. spell the victim takes another 1d4 and loses 1 Strength (creatures without Strength suffer -1 to later attacks), regained at 1 point per hour. The barbed tail stings for 2d4 damage plus 1d4 cold, no save.

It also casts one spell per round with the slots of a 6th-level wizard (4/2/2), by will alone with no components. Its spells are set at creation and each returns unstudied 20 hours after use; a common set is four magic missiles, blindness, flaming sphere, and two lightning bolts. Someone with hands may fit it with worn protective magic items.

It is immune to charm, sleep, hold, death-related magic, cold spells, poison, acid, venom, gas, and breathing-based attacks, but each vial of holy water deals 2d4. It attacks any psionic creature it spots. Only its maker can make it cast, and psionic attempts to force it leave it briefly confused and enraged at the meddler.

Habitat and Society

Dark naga make most of them to guard young and mundane treasure. If abandoned or orphaned, a bone naga roams ruins, caverns, and deep woods, often with lesser undead in tow.

Ecology

It eats nothing, though it may kill large predators, humans included, for sport or spell practice. Its bones serve telepathy magic, and their powder can substitute for powdered iron, unholy water, or smoldering dung when drawing the circle for protection from good.
