Wild ancestors of the farmyard pig, boars are short-tempered tuskers that keep fighting after taking deadly wounds, and their undercooked meat can carry a nasty parasite.
A boar resembles a hog, but its hair is darker and bristlier, its snout a little shorter and its tail straighter. Some breeds carry small tusks on either side of the face. Meeting a family group, or one big male, by surprise can be fatal.
An angry boar bites savagely, and tusked kinds use them to gash any bare flesh. Boars are notoriously hard to put down: one reduced to between 0 and -6 hit points keeps fighting for 1d4+1 more rounds, and only at -7 or below does it die on the spot.
Boars normally travel as families. When a group is met, one is the boar and the rest are sows and young (sounders) in a 1:4 ratio, so a dozen animals breaks down as 3 sows, 8 young and a single boar. Sows have 3 Hit Dice and deal 2d4 per attack.
Eating nearly anything exposes them to a tiny roundworm, Trichinella spiralis. People who eat poorly cooked boar meat can catch trichinosis from it, suffering fever, sweats and aching muscles that persist until cured by a cure disease spell. All three kinds below are good to eat. The lard works just like that of tame pigs, wild hides make gloves and comfortable leather armor, and the stiff bristles become brushes.
Giant boar (elothere): this prehistoric ancestor is just as hot-tempered. Boars and sows fight alike, and either one battles on for 1d4 rounds at 0 to -10 hit points, dying outright at -11 or lower. When 3 or more appear there is just a 25% chance of young among them, 1-4 of the herd, with 2-6 Hit Dice and damage of 1d4, 1d4+1, 1d6+1, 2d4 or 3d4 per attack to match.
Warthog: these tropical swine turn violent only when cornered or when their territory is threatened, and slash twice per round with their big tusks. Males and females are equally dangerous. In a group larger than 2, the extras are young of 1-2 Hit Dice dealing 1d3 or 1d4+1. A warthog fights for 1-2 rounds at 0 to -5 hit points and drops dead at -6 or below.
