Bloodflower

A lovely white-blossomed shrub whose sweet narcotic scent drops passersby into a deep sleep, then feeds on them through spiny leaves until its petals blush red.

Setting: Dragon Magazine · Sources: Dragon167

Appearance

Fresh bloodflower blossoms are pale, nearly see-through white. While the plant digests a meal the petals warm to pink and finally to a deep crimson, then fade back to white once digestion ends four turns later, signaling it can feed again. In the wild these bushy plants cluster in groups of 2-5.

Combat

The danger is the perfume. Anyone within 5 feet of a bloom breathes a quick-acting narcotic and must save vs. poison or drop asleep on the spot. A sleeper who lands within 2 feet of the plant is seized by a set of spiny underleaves, each about 6 inches long, which pierce the skin and draw blood. Every round this deals damage equal to the bloodflower's own hit points. The victim never wakes while still in range of the scent, and the plant keeps drinking until he is dead. Dragging him clear of the perfume is the cure: he comes to after one turn, and the wounds heal normally.

Habitat and Society

Since it blooms around the clock, a tame variety makes a fine silent guard. Owners plant it in garden beds or in wide borders around key buildings and even whole cities, and a single potted bloodflower in a treasure vault makes a nasty trap for thieves.
