Slow, many-legged reptiles whose gaze turns flesh to stone, a family that includes the poison-breathing greater basilisk and the acid-spitting, dragon-blooded dracolisk.
Every member of this reptilian family has a gaze that turns living flesh to stone. The gaze also works across planar boundaries, killing outright on the Astral and turning victims into ethereal stone on the Ethereal, visible only to those on that plane or able to see ethereal things.
The common basilisk is a dull brown, eight-legged lizard with a yellowish belly and pale green, glowing eyes. Its sluggish metabolism keeps it slow. It has strong, toothy jaws, but the gaze is its real weapon. A basilisk that sees its own reflected eyes is petrified, though only with a smooth, clear reflector and light no dimmer than strong torchlight.
This larger relative is often set to guard treasure. It rears up to rake with sharp claws and bite. Type K poison coats the claws, saved against at +4. Its breath is poisonous too: anything that comes within 5 feet of its jaws, however briefly, must save vs. poison at +2 each round of exposure or die.
Its gaze reaches 50 feet, but its oddly shaped eyes are nearsighted. Even with a polished mirror in good light, the greater basilisk has only a 10% chance of being petrified by its reflection, and none at all unless the mirror is within 10 feet.
Sages say a renegade black dragon mated with an exceptionally large basilisk to sire the first dracolisk. The deep brown, dragon-like result moves fairly fast on six legs and can fly for short bursts of a turn or two.
It attacks with taloned forelegs and a savage bite, and up to three times a day it spits acid in a line 5 feet wide and 30 feet long for 4d6, halved by a save vs. breath weapon. Meeting its gaze petrifies anyone within 20 feet. Nictitating membranes over its hooded eyes mean its reflected gaze petrifies it only 10% of the time. Fighters averting their eyes in melee suffer -4 to hit.
