A fast-swimming, camouflaged ambusher related to the opabinia, whose two spined, four-fingered hands skewer small prey and snatch wands and daggers from larger victims.
The yohoia is a close cousin of the opabinia and shares that creature's general build. Where its relative carries a single pincer, though, the yohoia has two grasping 'hands', each tipped with four slightly flexible finger-spines.
It hunts the same way its cousin does, blending into its surroundings and lunging from ambush, and imposes the same surprise penalty. It swims at twice the opabinia's speed. Small prey is impaled on the fingertips, after which the arm folds back to deliver the meal to the mouth. Because the spines bend, the yohoia can also clutch objects too big to spear. Against a man-sized target it tends to rip away some item of equipment, perhaps a pouch, a dagger, a wand, or even a holstered pistol. A character fighting to keep hold of the item uses the same Strength or Fitness roll given for breaking out of an opabinia's grip.
Several yohoia will cooperate against a shared threat, swarming it together much the way a hive of bees turns out to defend itself.
