Wolvern

A clever, semi-telepathic canine that reads where prey will dodge next, the wolvern is peaceful toward thinking beings, and fiercely loyal to anyone who can talk with it.

Setting: Lankhmar · Sources: LNR1 Wonders of Lankhmar

Appearance

This brainy canine hybrid hunts in packs, typically of two to eight. Where water is scarce and several packs converge on the same spring at once, gatherings of sixty or more are possible.

Combat

Every wolvern is partly telepathic, letting it foresee where fleeing prey will turn or where an enemy will swing. This sense fails against telepathic beings, including those granted telepathy by magic.

Wolverns are calm, curious visitors around human camps and respect intelligent creatures; they seldom attack anything as smart as themselves or smarter unless threatened or mistreated. When hunger or provocation pushes them to fight, their foresight gives them +2 to hit and imposes -2 on their opponents' attacks. Both modifiers vanish against an opponent who is currently telepathic, by nature or by magic. Even a starving wolvern instantly befriends anyone who speaks with it, whether by telepathy or a speak with animals spell.

Habitat and Society

Each pack, or clan, is led by its most intelligent member, who keeps the role until a smarter wolvern emerges or it dies. Their language of barks, whines and growls is varied, but no one can learn it without first being befriended by a wolvern.

Ecology

Like wolves, wolverns pair for life, producing 2d4 pups each year and guarding them so savagely that few humans have ever glimpsed a litter. The only way to gain one as a companion is to converse with it, telepathically or through speak with animals. Awed by the speaker's intellect, it bonds and stays loyal until mistreated, at which point it will do anything to escape, even harming its former master.
