A golden-scaled celestial unicorn of the upper planes, a 20th-level wizard and peerless foe of fiends whose awe can freeze an entire army in its tracks.
T'uen-rin are mighty servants of good, related to the prime-world ki-rin yet surpassing them in wisdom, ability and nobility. They look like their cousins: horselike, with coats of fine golden scales that flash impossible colors, manes and tails of deep dark gold, pinkish-ivory hooves and horn, and wise, beautiful faces with deep violet eyes. Many travelers swear nothing in the multiverse is lovelier than one galloping across a dawn sky. Any human tongue is theirs to speak, and they can also reach minds through empathy or telepathy. Nonevil natural beasts never harm them, and flowers sprout wherever their hooves touch earth.
Peaceful though they are, t'uen-rin attack evil fearlessly on sight never shrinking from a duel with the mightiest tanar'ri or greater baatezu. They often prefer a straightforward physical fight to spells or awe: two hoof strikes and a horn thrust, counting as +5 weapons against creatures that need enchanted weapons to hit.
Each casts wizard spells at 20th level, with fifteen 1st-level spells per day, fourteen 2nd-level, thirteen 3rd-level and so on down to seven 9th-level. They favor illusion and enchantment but will unleash symbol, wish or power word spells against truly mighty evil.
Telepathy lets a t'uen-rin read nearby surface thoughts, so it is never surprised and can know alignment and detect lie unerringly. At will it can assume gaseous form, turn invisible, summon weather, call lightning and step freely onto the Astral or Ethereal. Air elementals never attack it unless forced by an evil power equal to its own. Daily it can also conjure lasting creations: nourishing food and drink for 10d10 people, along with soft goods (100 cubic feet), wooden items (50 cubic feet) and stone or metal items (20 cubic feet).
Once per day it can radiate divine awe. Every non-divine being in sight must save vs. spell at -6 or stand frozen for 20 minus its Wisdom score in rounds (Wisdom 12 means 8 rounds); a physical attack breaks the spell after a 1-round delay. It may then lay a special suggestion or emotion effect over everyone awed, enough to rally an army or rout an evil legion. It usually spares those it has awed unless they are evil and must die to be stopped.
T'uen-rin live for the good, aiding the good-hearted and seeking out evil to destroy, but they are brilliant enough to know when to back off: a tanar'ri on the Astral is fair game, but they will not chase it into the Abyss. They travel the Outer Planes in their endless war on evil and seldom meddle in prime affairs.
Their true home is the sky above the upper planes, and some go centuries without touching the ground. That aloofness has planted a seed of arrogance in many, and some planars predict a downfall unless they reconnect with mortal concerns.
Some prime cultures treat them as goodness incarnate, though planars know greater powers exist. Still, few beings are more gifted, and only a deity would dare fight one fairly. All known t'uen-rin are female. Some say only a couple dozen exist and each death is an irreplaceable loss; others claim the ki-rin are the males of the same divided species. The t'uen-rin decline to discuss it.
