Translator

A gleaming silver orb that races across the planes carrying the gods' own messages, stunning anyone who blocks its path and calling divine wrath down on attackers.

Setting: Planescape · Sources: MC8 Outer Planes Appendix

Appearance

Couriers of the powers themselves, translators streak between the planes at astonishing speed bearing messages that truly matter. Each looks like a gleaming silver ball about three feet across, with no front, back or physical body to speak of. While carrying a message it throbs with a yellow inner glow.

A translator can speak any language it needs. It absorbs a new tongue magically in about 30 seconds just by being near creatures who use it, without having to hear it spoken.

Combat

It fights only if a foe cannot be outrun or is actively blocking a delivery. Given its speed and agility the second case is rare, and when not on an errand it simply flees.

Cornered, it fires a beam of silver light at any target it picks, and only a natural 1 makes it miss. The beam stuns automatically, with no saving throw, for 1d12-3 rounds; a result of zero or less means it lacked the power to stun. A stunned victim can neither move nor think, frozen in complete suspended animation, and a struck spellcaster's mind is wiped of every memorized spell.

Upper-plane deities protect these servants fiercely, since they carry divine plans from plane to plane, and a sending deity always knows when its courier is attacked mid-delivery. Roll d100: on 01-99 the god sends one celestial servant. On 00, roll again: 01-99 brings 1d6+1 celestials, and a second 00 means the deity arrives in person. Help appears 1d10 rounds after the attack.

Habitat and Society

These quiet, modest beings are the gods' most prized messengers. They have no society, receive no reward and want none, finding contentment in total service. They do nothing but carry messages and wait patiently between them. They cannot alter a message in any way, and deliver both its exact words and the intent behind them.

Ecology

Divine energy sustains them, so they never eat, drink or sleep. They might pass for automatons, but they are thinking beings able to judge a situation and act in whatever way best gets the message through.
