Sea Cloaker

A manta-shaped cousin of the cloaker that drops from dark reef ceilings, wraps a swimmer in its body, and gnaws away until it is killed or torn loose.

Setting: Lankhmar · Sources: Lankhmar: City of Adventure (2nd Ed.)

Appearance

Shaped like a manta ray, the sea cloaker has a flat black back dotted with small red eyes. Its underside is pale gray and holds a savage, fang-lined mouth.

Combat

Its one special attack, on a hit, envelops the target, which then takes 1-6 plus its unadjusted Armor Class each round (AC below 0 counts as 0), so a leather-clad victim suffers 1d6+8. Its tail lashes others for 1-6.

Damage to a cloaker holding prey is split with the victim. At 25% of its hit points, roll 1d20 against its morale; if it fails, it lets go and flees.

Habitat and Society

They lurk in cramped, dim hollows or cling to walls and ceilings to drop on passing prey. They live in a drowned, sunken kingdom and may serve its rulers.

Ecology

Normally scavengers, they turn predator readily. They can survive 1-4 turns out of water but move slowly and attack at -4 on land. A victim who staggers ashore keeps taking damage until the cloaker is killed or removed.
