Noctral

Huge, owl-like sages of the heavenly mountain who advise celestials and gods, know a startling amount about everything, and make silent, deadly hunters when they must.

Appearance

Picture a golden-eyed owl as tall as a grown man, with wings that stretch 20 feet or wider: that is a noctral of the heavenly mountain. Their feathers range from dove gray to black and melt into shadow at twilight. Like barn owls they have heart-shaped faces, and inner lids shield their huge eyes. Their hollow bones leave them far lighter than their size suggests.

Combat

Gentle by temperament, a noctral sidesteps violence. It can match a lesser fiend or two, yet it knows better than to take on mighty fiends or seasoned adventurers. Faced with real danger, a noctral nearly always retreats, fetches nearby archons or celestials, and leads them back.

When it must fight, it attacks from the air with talons and hooked beak. With at least 50 feet of open space, it may swoop every second round, spending the other round maneuvering. A swoop gives up the beak attack but grants +2 to hit with talons, doubles their damage, and improves its AC to -1.

Spell-like powers: invisibility, speak with animals and tongues, plus legend lore at 15th level, thrice daily. It speaks to most mortals by telepathy out to a mile and, through that link, can effectively detect lies from humans and demihumans.

Built for night hunting, a noctral sees as clearly in pitch darkness as a person in sunlight and hears about four times as well as an elf. Night never catches it by surprise, and in daylight it is surprised on just a 1 or 2, even while sleeping. It flies in total silence, so at dusk or night foes suffer -6 on surprise checks against it when it is airborne.

Habitat and Society

They roost near sites of learning and power on the heavenly mountain, often befriending archons, celestials or notable petitioners and pressing advice on them, which would be tiresome if they were not so often right. They are the mountain's lorekeepers and historians: with an 80% chance of knowing a given fact of its past and a 20% chance of real expertise in some other plane's history. Like sages, most also master two or three fields such as astrology, magic or mathematics, with an 80% chance of knowing any fact in those fields.

They adore lecturing, if a bit condescendingly, so a courteous, patient questioner generally leaves satisfied, but they refuse anyone whose purpose looks evil. Many advise powers or celestial stewards, and some enjoy a good power's protection: harming one carries a 50% chance of that patron's retribution, and if the patron steps in, 95% of the time it dispatches a powerful servant, a planetar or deva for instance.

Ecology

Refined as they are, noctrals remain hunters, though they take only unthinking animals and only from hunger, never for fun. A noctral may politely pause a lecture on some arcane subject, drop onto a nearby rabbit, and carry on teaching while it eats.
