Moon-Horse

Silver-white, spell-casting horses of a hidden elven isle, wise as their riders and immune to the draining touch of the undead.

Setting: Forgotten Realms · Sources: Monstrous Compendium, 1995 Annual, Volume 2; FOR5 Elves of Evermeet

Appearance

Moon-horses run from pure white to silvery gray, with manes anywhere from white to black. Their deep eyes shine with intelligence, and their faces show a full range of moods.

Combat

Far steadier than ordinary horses, they are hardy fighters. Each can cast one spell per day, determined by a 1d10 roll on a table of options. Special attacks such as undead level drain or paralysis cannot touch them, though ordinary damage still applies.

Habitat and Society

These clever, magical horses live only on a hidden elven island kingdom. The last herds elsewhere were carried there when the elves withdrew from the mainland, and most now roam its woods and meadows freely in herds of up to 20. Their temperament mirrors the elves', and many choose to serve them as companions and cavalry mounts.

The bond is ancient. Legends recall champions charging into war on these wise steeds and horses giving their lives for their riders, and today they still carry the elven queen's riders.

Ecology

Like the elves, moon-horses breed poorly: a mare usually bears just one or two foals in her lifetime, which can exceed 200 years. Each birth is a great occasion, celebrated by horses and elves together.
