The rare, stone-walking male counterpart of the medusa, devoted unto death to his mate, who turns her petrified victims back into meat for their table.
A maedar pounds foes with two fists for 2d4 each, and once every three turns his touch reverses petrification, changing stone into flesh. After a round of total concentration he can walk through solid rock at his normal speed, but a phase door cast on him while inside stone kills him outright. He is immune to petrification, paralysis and spells like hold and slow, and to the bite of a medusa's snakes. His sight and his stone-to-flesh touch both reach the Astral and Ethereal planes.
The maedar is the barely known male of the medusa race, even rarer than its listed frequency suggests, and most medusae never meet one. They usually breed with human men, producing 2-6 eggs that become medusae. When a maedar is the father, the hatchlings are human babies, three girls for each boy, and only 1% of the boys are maedar; the rest, girls included, are ordinary babies who perish the moment they look upon their mother.
A maedar mates for life, will do anything for his partner, and spends years hunting anyone who kills her. Rarely leaving their shared lair, he is unknown to most sages. He provides their food by smashing her stone victims and changing the fragments into meat.
Maedar may ally with lawful evil beings such as orcs and kobolds for security or payment, but one coerced into service seeks revenge at the first chance.
A maedar who foresees his death can pour his spirit into the rock around him. A truly evil one stays aware while drifting through the earth until it meets a gem such as amethyst or feldspar, becomes imprisoned there and slowly goes mad. No spirit can be held in more than one such crystal.
Dug up intact, the glyptar can animate itself and any inorganic object attached to it. In a statue's eye it moves up to 1,000 pounds of stone as a golem. In a sword pommel it makes the blade fight unaided at +1 to hit and +2 damage, striking as a 6th-level fighter, and lets it slip harmlessly into stone. It and its setting pass through rock at normal speed, ignore phase door, can use stone to flesh on anything touched once every three turns, and stay immune to paralysis and petrification.
