Lhee

Winged space dogs with clever human hands, lhee chase comets and starships through the void, pestering sailors with spells and pranks that range from silly to lethal.

Setting: Spelljammer · Sources: MC9 Spelljammer Appendix II

Appearance

A lhee is a dog with nimble humanoid hands instead of forepaws and a pair of snow-white dove's wings behind its shoulders. They talk in barks and growls and can also speak with blink dogs. Lesser lhee look like dachshunds, chihuahuas and toy poodles; common lhee like pit bulls, dobermans and rottweilers; greater lhee like sheepdogs, St. Bernards and great danes.

Combat

Every lhee can go invisible at will and, three times daily each, cast blur, dancing lights, audible glamer and darkness 15' radius.

Common lhee cast at 3rd level, bite for 1d8 and look for fights. They are the nastiest type, their jokes are violent (shoving a torch-bearing halfling through a portal into the flame-sea, for example), and they are easily fooled by lesser lhee.

Lesser lhee are the cleverest of the void dogs. They bite for only 1d2 and dodge combat with spells, adding phantasmal force, spook and grease three times daily at 2nd level. They pick pockets at 50% and delight in stealing trinkets and small acts of sabotage aboard starships.

Greater lhee cast at 6th level, bite for 1d6 and see brawling as a normal part of a dog's life.

Habitat and Society

Each pack is one type, though breeds can mix, and dens in caves or hollows on small moons and planetoids. Bigger lhee bully smaller ones, and the leader is obeyed when the others feel like it. Common lhee chew everything to bits, so they have no treasure. Days go to racing comets, chasing ships, teasing sailors and eating. They chase cats and cannot resist trees, wizards' staves and masts.

Greater lhee are big friendly dogs, loyal, overjoyed to see people and so gullible they will fetch a burning stick hurled into the flame-sea. All lhee prank ship crews, but greater lhee truly believe the sailors like it.

Ecology

Any two met together are mates, with a 10% chance of a litter of 2d4 pups. Pups gain no powers until adulthood at six months. Training requires a pup no older than three weeks and a full year of work, and even trained watchdogs are undone by their tiny attention spans.
