Kodragon

A cat-sized, fur-covered dragon with bat wings and a child's voice, the kodragon roams its home plane recording history and shrinks troublesome foes with a puff of gas.

Setting: Dragonlance · Sources: MC4 Dragonlance Appendix (w/binder #2)

Appearance

For an instant a kodragon passes for a big bat, but the shape is unmistakably draconic: four thin legs, a long supple neck, all covered in soft gray fur where scales should be, with naked leathery bat wings. It has a blunt muzzle, huge shining black eyes, a tail furred right to its bare, pointed tip, and forepaws with opposable thumbs. It is about as big as a small house cat and exceedingly rare.

Kodragons speak human languages fluently in soft, hissing voices like a child's, and give off a faint musky scent unlike any mammal's.

Combat

Kodragons avoid fights when they can. Cornered or angered, they fight with a bite and their two forepaw claws, staying aloft to dart at backs and weak spots, zipping between legs and under arms. While maneuvering like this they gain -2 to Armor Class but take +2 to their attack rolls.

Each of their two magical breaths fills a 10-foot cloud. One is a shrinking gas that reduces victims to 5% of normal size unless they save vs. breath weapon by diving clear; the other undoes a kodragon's shrinking gas, though no other kind of shrinking.

Once per round a kodragon can use teleport without error. It would rather fly than teleport mid-fight, but blinking away from real danger is its main defense. It also uses plane shift, usually for leisurely travel, sometimes to escape.

Habitat and Society

Kodragons live only on the plane of the Star Wyrm, a layer of the Abyss that the world's gods transformed into a realm of absolute neutrality. It resembles the material world, except that creatures swim through the air by willing it.

They love art and knowledge and use no tools or weapons except a special tablet and stylus for keeping histories and other records. They have no common culture: each roams where it pleases and writes down whatever it deems important, and old kodragons whose wanderlust has faded keep great secret libraries of these clay tablets. Nosy and talkative enough to land in trouble, they are ideal envoys for the Star Wyrm thanks to their verbal skill and careful records.

They bear live young and raise them in a belly pouch like a marsupial's. The pouch functions like a bag of holding and otherwise carries tablets and styluses. Mothers do the raising; fathers visit only now and then.

Ecology

Nothing preys on kodragons; they are so hard to catch and so small a meal that a predator depending on them would starve. A gland in the neck can be made into potions of shrinking. They live on liquids alone, whether wine, water, mercury or hemlock, and must drink their own weight every day.
