Ivory Figurine

A palm-sized elephant golem of carved, scrimshawed ivory that can swell to 11 feet tall, gore with enchanted tusks, and trumpet hard enough to deafen foes and shatter glass.

Setting: Ravenloft · Sources: Ravenloft Appendix III

Appearance

These miniature golems are cut from elephant tusk or similar ivory and nearly always take the shape of an elephant. Most of the detail, from the eyes and ears to decorative borders, comes from fine scrimshaw lines etched into the polished surface and darkened with ink. A figurine has no mind of its own and no voice, but it follows simple orders from its owner.

Combat

At normal size the figurine stabs with tiny, needle-thin tusks, each jab dealing 1d4. That is barely a pinprick, yet the enchantment on those tusks makes them more dangerous than they look. Only weapons of +1 or better can harm the golem itself.

Three times a day it can call on a version of enlarge and grow to 11 feet in height for ten rounds, though casting reduce, or dispel magic, cuts it short. Full-sized, it gores for 2d8, and a natural 20 on its attack roll means it also tramples the target for another 2d6.

Also three times daily, at either size, the elephant can trumpet. Everyone within 30 feet takes 2d6 damage and is deafened for 2d6 rounds; a save vs. spell halves the damage and prevents the deafness. Exposed fragile items such as potion flasks and holy water vials must save vs. crushing blow or shatter. A deafened creature suffers -1 on surprise rolls, and a deafened spellcaster has a 20% chance to miscast any spell with a verbal component.

Cold and electricity do nothing to an ivory figurine, but fire and acid hurt it normally.

Habitat and Society

Most golem-like of the figurines and easiest to control, a freed one usually just wanders off after other prey. If its creator tries to stop it, though, it fights with all the fury of any golem gone rogue.

Ecology

The maker carves and polishes the tusk to a perfect shape, then etches and inks the scrimshaw features. Bringing it to life calls for shout, enlarge (or animal growth), limited wish (or raise dead) and animate object (or polymorph any object). Expect two months of labor and an 8,000 gp bill.
