Ice Mummy

The freeze-dried corpse of a mountaineer who died alone, an ice mummy lures climbers onto snow bridges, breathes cones of cold, and numbs everything near it with killing frost.

Setting: Dragon Magazine · Sources: Dragon #238

Appearance

Tight, leathery brown skin covers the ice mummy's bones, and its hair and clothes survive, worn by centuries in the ice. Its gear is primitive: flint knives, copper axes, stone-tipped spears and obsidian arrows. Its sunken, cloudy eyes stay open and full of hatred, and its mouth gapes in a frozen scream.

Combat

Clever and patient, it lays false trails that lead onto thin snow spans across crevasses. Often the only warning is a figure glimpsed in glacier fog that stumbles and falls, luring helpers into the ambush. It strikes only when prey is isolated. If fear has not herded everyone into a trap, it turns to spells or its breath, then backs off to let magical and natural cold finish the job, glad if anyone is foolish enough to follow.

Though so rare that many mountaineers know them only from songs, most cast spells as 9th-level wizards limited to 3rd level and below, and never use fire as a weapon; affect normal fires to shrink a campfire is allowed, fireball is not. They also know three unique spells: call blizzard, ice shatter and slippery slope.

Its strength gives +1 to hit and damage with melee weapons. Its barbed arrows get +1 to hit and, chilled supernaturally, deal 2 hp each round they remain embedded; pulling one out without a healing proficiency causes 1d6 more. The chill is fully negated by wish, limited wish or dispel magic. Unarmed, its icy fists hit for 1d12 and also wither flesh as the staff does. Up to thrice daily it breathes a cone of cold 20 feet long and 10 feet wide at the base for 4d6.

Warm-blooded creatures within 25 feet are numbed and suffer 1d3 hp of frostbite per round. Nonmagical weapons that hit it must save vs. crushing blow or shatter from the cold. It also causes fear like a normal mummy.

Ecology

Ice mummies are travelers who got lost in the frozen high country and died afraid and alone, resenting everyone who left them to die. They punish anyone who dares cross the terrain that killed them, as if mocking their fate.
