Children of elven and human love who belong fully to neither people, brooding loners prone to reckless bravado on the battlefield.
A half-elf looks much like its elven parent, though males can grow beards, which no true elf can. They stand a little taller and are somewhat heavier of build than most elves.
Half-elves are fine warriors with no glaring weaknesses, save a habit of taking deadly risks to prove themselves. One will often seek out the toughest enemy in a fight or volunteer for the most perilous task. They are at their best in melee, and those who cast spells usually save them for emergencies or for helping friends. Their favorite weapon is the long sword, with daggers and long bows close behind. They wear many types of armor but choose chain mail when they can get it, and unlike most elves they can become skilled riders.
Shame shadows most half-elves from childhood, leaving them insecure and full of doubt. Some turn rebellious or antisocial; others trust strangers readily yet cannot open up enough to form deep, lasting friendships. Many have a talent for leadership but feel unworthy of it. Whatever their temperament, nearly all are quiet, brooding solitaries.
Humans and elves are drawn to one another, so mixed unions keep happening, but no elven nation approves of them, and such couples must keep their love quiet. The proud elder high elves find these unions repellent. The western high elves are kinder, giving half-elves a cool welcome and a place in their communities, though seldom any position of trust. Wild elves honor half-elves as they honor any natural creature, but never take them into a tribe as equals.
Human attitudes have soured over time. Once a half-elf child was a blessing and an honor to a human family; now people tend to see half-elves as odd and somehow lesser. No town or society of half-elves exists. A few settle into crafts or trades, but most drift.
Half-elves feel no bond with any race, though some form enduring friendships with humans or hill dwarves. They eat plain fare and have no special tastes.
